Report from the 22nd Petrolia School Wide Reunion.
PESA School Wide Reunions:
Attended: about 200 ex-students, former and current faculty, and guests.
Welcome given by: Gary Waitman, current high school principal
Master of ceremonies: John Swenson, Jr., class of 1963
Invocation: James Jones, class of 1966
Pledge of Allegiance to US flag said in unison & led by Clarence "Buddy" Linton, class of 1968
School song sung in unison and led by Marchuetta Lundy Mathews and Sheryl Wilson Gunstanson.
Sheryl presented a gift to the Master of Ceremonies (engraved letter opener and key chain) and the following awards:
Traveled farthest: Gerald (Jerry) Snodgrass, class of 1948, from LaVerne, California, (Received a plaque)
Oldest ex-student: Mary Lee Weatherall Haney Maxey, class of 1937, from Wichita Falls, TX, (Received a plaque)
BBQ brisket and sausage dinner was catered by Rafter J of Iowa Park, TX--one of the top restaurants in Texas!
Highway South Band and Robert David, Jr entertained.
Western art exhibit featured the works of: C.H. Dowdy (1948), Ralph Stearns (1972), Sheryl Wilson Gunstanson (1974), and Mary Ann Cunningham, former elementary teacher.
Decorations included the boot collection of Wendell Mayo (deceased), 1955 class, photos of rodeo event participants and winners, including that of Ronny Adams, 1977 CRA Champion Steer Wrestler, Class of 1963; Mickey Gee, 1999 PRCA World Champion Steer Wrestler, Class of 1994; Meta Adams, 1957, '58, '59, '60 GRA World Champion Bull Rider, former high school teacher. Photos of rodeo stock contractors/owners: William Bill Lyon, J.H. "Goat" Mayo class of 1931, who was also the designer of the Tex Rickard Memorial Rodeo Arena, 9-Man Board Member, and President of Clay Co Pioneer Association; Ray Mayo- class of 1962; and Guy Mayo- class of 1967. Also featured were photos of Rodeo Queens, Pioneer Queens, and Duchesses from Petrolia School as well as Ag projects/ 4H Projects, Western Bands, Western artists, farmers and ranchers from Petrolia School ex-students. These were featured on posters as well as in albums or framed displays.

Former faculty attending included: Burt Weems, former Junior high principal and coach;
Lucille Glasgow, former teacher, and Mary Ann Cunningham, former elementary teacher.
Ex-students donated monetary donations and canned goods for Petrolia Senior Citizens Center meals program.
Booths featuring Katie's Dog Place Rescue and Sanctuary of Petrolia, and also Clay County 1890 Jail Museum were available for ex-students to find out about their activities and fund raisers. Several of the shelter dogs visited throughout the day and ex-students enjoyed their visits.
A great time of visiting and reminiscing with friends and classmates occurred, and all are looking forward to the next reunion!
The Petrolia Ex-Students' Association (PESA) hosts a school wide reunion every three years, on the 2nd Friday and Saturday of June.
